INSTRUCTIONS: Part A
Your first task is to create your own thesis statement and outline in response to the following prompt (a question similar to the ones you can expect to see on the exam):
Discuss how one of the theories of injustice or Othering that we’ve read (Hegel, de Beauvoir, Ahmad, Spivak) operates in “Recitatif,” “Letter”, “The Story of my Body”, “March”, or Things Fall Apart. What does your application of the theory reveal about the literary work?
The questions on the actual exam will be similar to this in that they will suggest what you need to do: select appropriate works to talk about from things we have read in class (no outside research needed), put them in conversation with each other, and make an original argument. Writing experts Cathy Birkenstein and Gerald Graff note that the heart of college writing is “they say, I say”: clearly explore others’ points, and explain your own position in relation to them. Your position is likely to be synthetic: that is, it will draw on and possibly complicate the works you’ve read rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing with them. The theoretical works from the first several weeks (Hegel, de Beauvoir, Ahmad, Spivak) will be stressed, but you should also be prepared to engage with the literary works (Ortiz Cofer, King, Lewis, Morrison, Achebe, and Satrapi). Put them in conversation with one another, and join that conversation with your own analysis.
Remember, a thesis statement is a one to two sentence statement of your argument. Basically, it is the main idea that your essay will persuade us is true. It should be contestible–that is, someone should theoretically be able to make a logical counter-argument–not something that is obviously factual or a descriiption of what you’re going to do (for example, compare and contrast). Ideally it should gesture to why that argument matters. In short, your thesis should include a WHAT (for example, the depiction of Spivak’s concept of subaltern in Things Fall Apart) and a SO WHAT (Achebe’s subalterns complicate Spivak’s concepts in that some of the people we thought of as subaltern characters become very useful allies of the British in the process of colonialization.) [You may not use this example for this assignment or your exam unless you have something original to add.] Your outline should show us what you’ll cover and how you’ll support your thesis.
Your completed assignment for the Thesis Exchange should include the 1-2 sentence thesis at the beginning, which should be followed by an outline of the 3-4 paragraphs you’re planning to write later. The outline itself should be formatted as follows (replace the brackets with your ideas, and make sure you complete the outline in a way that points to evidence in our texts). Note that in this example, paragraphs are represented by letters, and in your outline, by the letter you should indicate the paragraph’s topic sentence. Numbered lines are supporting information you use to develop the main point of that paragraph in a logical way.
