Decision Making and Emotional Intelligence
We spend most of the time in LDRS 320 Ethical Decision Making focusing on the technical objective parts of decision making. What are the decision models we can use? How does dialogue impact our decisions?
Today we will explore the most significant influence in our decision making: our emotions. When we make decisions, our emotions and mental state are at the heart and soul of each of our decisions. We cannot escape it.
Only by understanding how our often-negative emotions impact our decision making can we bring objectivity into our decision making, to look beyond our own emotions and recognize how our decisions can not only support the emotions of others, but make objective decisions based on the reality of the situation and not the reality of our emotional state.
It is easy to understand how our emotional core impacts our personal decision, but what about a corporation? What about a world leader? No matter what your role is personally or professionally, how you feel about yourself will be at the heart of how you treat others. As an example, if you feel like you can never do anything right, you will require your team to be telling you how great you are. Of course, this is not an out-word rule, but it is how the organizational structure and roles are set up. It is seemingly hidden, but none-the-less present. This is only one example.
Today I want you to watch the two videos by a national speaker on Leadership. As you watch the videos, think about how the topics of loneliness and shame or other emotions impact decisions; impact your decisions.
Respond by writing a 2 page paper or do a 5 minute recording describing how you see these topics impacting your decisions. If you are comfortable, share your personal stories about how emotions have impacted your decisions, good or bad.
Specifically Address The Man in the Arena quote in the 2nd video.
