Write 3-paragraphs on one idea in our required readings thus far:
Mulvey, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema
or
Devereaux, Oppressive Texts, Resisting Readers, and the Gendered Spectator: The New Aesthetics
In light of one (or two if needed) of the following movies:
Cleo from 5-7(Varda, 1962) [1:30]
Daisies. (Chytilová, 1966) [1:16]
Thelma and Louise(Scott, 1991) [2:18]
Pick an idea you find interesting and/or easy to explain
Focus on that one (i.e., main) idea the whole time.
Explain that idea as fully, clearly, and correctly as possible to the best of your ability, using the reading(s) as your backup and proof in your writing
You may but do not have to make it an argument or give your opinion; you can, if you want, just discuss, interpret, or explain the readingthe point is to clearly and correctly do so in at least one full paragraph, and what you do in the other two paragraphs is up to you.
Give at least one short quote from the readingbut not more than one quote per paragraph.
Cite the page # the quote is from.
Explain the quote.
Fully explain how your chosen idea is related to that quote or how the quote is related to the main idea of the paper.
3 paragraphs total, at least one of which must be directly about your chosen reading. If you need four, thats ok.
Paragraphs are 4-10 sentences each.
Quotations of one full sentence or more do not count toward the minimum length requirement.
Any vague, general, empty, irrelevant, or repetitive sentences and phrases will not count toward the length requirement.
READ: All quoted material must have quotation marks around it.
Explain all quotes in your own words.
Each time you first refer to, or start to explain or discuss, a new idea from the reading, give the page or paragraph # that the idea appears on.
Cite sources even when not directly quotingi.e., paraphrasing.
If you end up getting ideas or info from outside of the course materials, you must absolutely not hide that fact (this would be academic dishonesty); instead, have integrity and cite those sources as well, *including all websites*.
There must be at least one citation from one of the required readings, since the point is to explain an idea from a reading, and to do so, you must refer to it.
