For this essay, you will observe either a person who is working or people who are working in the
same place. Some options to choose from: a person who works from home (such as a family
member), a person who works in multiple locations (a plumber or electrician), a person who works
at Collin (such as a teacher, not me though!), a person or people working in a specific location of
a business (such as a gym, grocery store, bookstore, fast-food restaurant), a person or people
volunteering (such as at an animal shelter), a person or a group of people who show themselves
working in a video format, such as YouTube (could be a person cooking, gardening, playing music,
etc.no cartoon characters or fictional figures). Although I prefer that you write about people in
the real world, if you arent able to, you have this virtual option.
The underlying purpose of your essay is to inform your audience about this worker/these
workers, the work, and the work environment(s). If you are writing about a family member, do
not refer to this person as your family member or use my mom or Uncle Albert. If you are
writing about a teacher at Collin, dont assume your audience knows about Collin College or who
the teacher is. If you are writing about a familiar place with many locations (like a fast-food
restaurant chain), be sure that your readers learn something that they dont already know as
customers. You can do this by focusing on that specific location and the situations of the
individuals who work there. If you are writing about videos on YouTube, be sure these are about
the same person or group of people and dont write as if your audience can see these videos or
know who these people are. Imagine that they do not have access to any videos and arent aware
of the person or people.
Your introduction should make it very clear what the situation is (mention the location if you are
writing about a workplace) and the kind of work the people do (or the person does); be sure to
provide necessary explanations.
Your introduction should also have a clear informative thesis
that makes a statement about the worker(s), the work, and/or this particular workspace. Your
thesis should be something that would not be immediately apparent to a casual observer; it
should reveal something that you discovered through a careful observation process. To help you
generate a thesis, consider answering questions, such as: Is this a good job and/or a good place
to work? If so, why? For whom? What are the main difficulties people face in this work and how
do they cope with these difficulties? What kinds of relationships do people have?
The remainder of the essay should make your thesis apparent to your audience. Use descriptions,
examples, and details to support your points. The more specific you are, the more likely your
reader will believe your assertions. Do not use any sources (for example, information off the
internet about how highly rated a particular restaurant is on Yelp or when the business was
created). If you are using YouTube videos, refrain from viewing the comments and do not refer
to them in your essay. I want you to make your own, independent judgements (not be influenced
by what others have stated online)
