Now is your chance to learn about a Purdue major! For this activity, you will research an academic
major and then create a brochure to share with your instructor and your classmates. Your goal is to
assume your EDPS 105 audience knows NOTHING about the major you chose and to teach them. You
will be graded on the content of your brochure as well as the creative presentation of your ideas. It
should be both informative and interesting!
Required Content
1) Name of the major and the School or College in which it is located.
2) Description of the major: How would you describe this major to a stranger? What do you learn?
You can look at Purdue websites for descriptions, but the description you include must be in
your own words and stated in a way that other students will easily understand. Be authentic and
informative!
3) Provide at least three course numbers and titles of major courses a student would take in
their junior and/or senior year here. Your choices should reflect advanced coursework in the
major, not beginning courses. For example: Sociology Major = 300- or 400-level SOC classes (i.e.
SOC 324 or 450, not SOC 100!).
4) Plan of study information: When considering a major, most students want to know how much
math, science, foreign language, humanities, and other types of classes they must take.
a. Would a student need a lot of math to graduate in this major? If so, through what level?
b. How many science classes? What kind of science classes are most prominent?
c. Is foreign language required? Through what level?
5) Which kinds of students might like this major? Give at least THREE examples and support
them with solid reasoning. Use what you’ve learned from at least one inventory we have covered
in class. Utilize the terminology from the SDS, MBTI, Strengths, Values, or Strong Interest
inventories learned in class.

6) Additional insights: Include at least THREE new pieces of information from lists A and B below.
At least one piece needs to come from list A. Think about how this information would be
practical to an Exploratory Studies student. Remember, these are your big selling points for this
major. Make them fun and interesting!
a. From the major/department (hint: use their website to find this information):
• Interesting features of the major that set it apart from other Purdue majors?
• Points of pride – what does the department brag about on its website? Famous alumni?
Important historical contributions?
• Exciting faculty research projects or awards?
• Job placement information?
b. From the plan of study:
• How many credits of free electives are available? A lot, a few, or somewhere in the
middle? Does this major offer a lot of choice? Why or why not?
• Is there a minor or certificate required for this major? If so, what are they?
• Are there any required internships, clinicals, or practicums? If so, what are the specifics?
• What are the rules listed on the plan of study that seem to be really important to know?
• Do there seem to be a lot of lab classes? Or mostly lecture type classes? What are some
specific examples?
• What are some critical courses? What makes them “critical”? For example, are there any
fall/spring only classes that are prerequisites to other classes (thus should be taken early)?
• Anything else you noticed that might be important for an undecided student to know
before choosing this major?
7) CODO requirements: What are the class and/or GPA requirements to move into this major? Are
you required to attend a meeting? What should a student know about the actual process of getting
from Exploratory Studies to there?
8) Post-graduation information:
a. What types of jobs do students who graduate from the major typically get? Your answers to
this should be based on research (and the video from Class 6!), NOT guessing. Be specific.
b. Do students in this field typically go to graduate school? If yes, name specific advanced
degrees that students pursue after their undergraduate degree.
c. To further inform your answers for this section:
• Use both the college websites on the Purdue Admissions page and the University Catalog.
• Use general career websites like the Purdue Career Research Portal or Purdue’s Center for
Career Opportunities (CCO). The CCO also collects first destination data – where students
work after graduatio
