For this essay, you will do a rhetorical analysis of a chapter that we already covered from Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime: Stories from A South African Childhood. A Rhetorical analysis wants you to break down and examine
how the discourse in the text (the way the author communicates) informs, persuades, and entertains the audience, and or the reader.
This assignment fulfills all 5 of the Required Course Learn Outcomes:
1. Exhibit an understanding of audience, purpose, genre, context, and formatting that is responsive to the situation.
2. Plan, write, revise, and review multi-paragraph compositions that stress analytical, evaluative, exploratory, and persuasive/argumentative writing within various rhetorical situations.
3. Apply conventions of composition including organization, presentation, and stylistic choices.
4. Employ critical and evaluative reading skills in order to synthesize evidence and/or sources in support of a claim, using an appropriate documentation system.
5. Apply genre conventions including structure, paragraphing, tone, mechanics, grammar, syntax, and style.
Note:
? In any rhetorical analysis essay you must identify the tools the author uses to persuade the audience of their point of view. So you will have to identify what is the main message of the chapter you have chosen.
? This essay requires analyzing the author’s methods of persuasion (words and phrases that the author creates) and how effective they are to readers. You are not analyzing the message, but how the author presents the message.
Aristotle’s three persuasive appeals: As part of your analysis, you must consider the author’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos in response to the given prompt. A good approach to this is to create a separate paragraph for
each persuasive appeal.
For Additional Body Paragraph: Besides the three persuasive appeals, you must choose one or more other rhetorical devises the author uses to inform, persuade, and entertain the reader. For this see the document

Your Essay:
Introduction paragraph:
Your intro paragraph will follow the format : a hook/attention grabber, a short background on the chapter/memoir (state the author’s full name and the complete title of the memoir plus the chapter you are working from in quotation marks; after that refer to the author by last name). Formulate your opinion into a well-crafted thesis statement that completely addresses the prompt. It should address the ‘who,’ ‘what,’ ‘how’
and ‘why’ questions. Your rhetorical analysis thesis statement comes at the end of your introductory paragraph, and it should not be more than two sentences.
Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph will have a topic sentence that directly supports the thesis statement (M). Next you may
have a transitional sentence, or you may go directly into offering textual evidence to support your claim (E).
Your Evidence should not be 2-3 completed sentences, but short phrases taken from the text. Each evidence is
followed by an analysis (A). In your analysis you explain how the said evidence supports your claim. You do not tell me what the evidence says. Each body paragraph should have between 2-3 examples of evidence. Each
evidence is followed by an analysis. Your last few sentences are the link, which ties back to your topic sentence and creates a transition to the next idea/paragraph.
Of course, how many body paragraphs are determined by your topic sentences. For this essay, you should have a minimum of six paragraphs: an introduction paragraph with at thesis statement, a closing paragraph, and one
for each persuasive appeal, ethos, pathos, and logos. You will also need an additional body paragraph in which you will analyze a rhetorical device of your choice.
