For this assignment, you will construct a manifesto. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, manifestos are written or spoken statements that support[e] a cause, [propound] a theory or argument, or promot[e] a certain lifestyle. For this paper, you will choose and define a belief you have (political, economic, social, religious, etc.) and narrate and reflect upon an event or experience having to do with that belief. You can narrate and reflect upon an event that caused you to have the belief, an event during which your belief was challenged, an event during which you were forced to question your belief. As you work through the writing process you will consider the rhetorical situation in which manifestos operate. Some notes:
You must be focused and specific. (You cant just say youre a capitalist or feminist, for example, you must choose a specific belief to discuss).
You must have a first-hand or personal experience with the belief you are writing about. (You cannot write an anti-smoking manifesto unless you or someone close to you are or once were a smoker, etc).
If you find the need to quote a person or text, all quotations must be appropriately cited. This is not a research paper, however, so most of the discussion should be in your own words.
