CASE STUDY #2 PROMPT:
You, Dr. Jones, are a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with a PhD in Sport Science from Florida State University. You are currently working at Ohio State University and have a joint appointment with the Kinesiology and Athletic Departments. You have been working with the OSU volleyball team since the beginning of their season and have become an important part of the team’s success. You have met with the team as a group, as well as individual athletes throughout the season. You have been invited to travel with the team to a game at Penn State University. The bus trip will take several hours and you anticipate you can use this time to meet with some of the athletes. It is late when you arrive at the hotel and everyone decides to check in and go directly to bed. As an early riser, you are up early to go for a run. As you are leaving your hotel room, you bump into an athlete leaving the coach’s room.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Students should identify the ethical relevant issue(s) specifically and
with reference to the ethical principal from the AASP set of
principles. Students are required to identify the ethical standard
and number. (https://appliedsportpsych.org/about-the-association-for-applied-sport-psychology/ethics/ethics-code/ under GENERAL ETHICAL STANDARDS)
2. Students should then identify all possible courses of action, that is,
all possible ways they could respond. “Do nothing” is always an
option and should be considered.
3. Students should then identify the short and long term risks and
benefits of each course of action. Remember that this refers
foremost to risks and benefits to the client not the Sport Psychology Practitioner. This
essentially should address four items: short term risks, long term
risks, short term benefits, and long term benefits. This should be in a TABLE/Excel within the word document.
4. In the last step, the student must select a course of action and
justify his or her choice.
5. Note that in most ethical situations there may be more than one
ethical issue to be considered. Pay close attention to the case
studies – is there only ONE ethical issue?
6. Note also that there may be more than one ethical course of action.
You will need to justify the choice you make
