The overall purpose of the project is to examine and understand the impact that these
emerging technologies have on the individual, group or social levels and fully explore how they
contribute into shaping our social networks. This project will help you develop critical and
analytical thinking skills, as well as learn to become more adept at synthesizing
information and developing informed views that back up your points with evidence.
Step 1: Secondary research and Critical analysis
The purpose of this stage is to conduct secondary analysis and collect information on the chosen
emerging media to prepare you later for conducting primary research.
• Introduction/Background information
o Short history about the chosen emerging media, by who, when, where, to whom.
o Describe the chosen platform, if it has different types, features, functions,
pros/cons.
o Why is it important to study and explore it? The rationale for choosing it. Think
of the research objective and make it clear to the reader the overall purpose of
paper.
• Literature Review: Search for articles then describe/summarize them
o At least 5 academic articles from reputable media/communication journals. The
paper must have methods/results sections.
o At least 3 news articles from reputable, credible organizations, such as a well-
known newspaper or magazine.
o Cite different chapters of Superconnected (or research that she cites in book)
o You can use statistics and cite research organization such as the Pew Research
Center Internet and American Life Project, if possible (http://pewinternet.org.).
o You can cite other media sources (YouTube videos, blog posts, websites– these
can be short, but make sure they are accurate, credible, and relevant – no “junk”!).
Critically analyze the topic; synthesize findings from articles. Provide your own “take” on the
topic in the form of a critique. You MUST show that you have gone beyond a summary, and
have critically thought about the topic.
• Analyzing Patterns of Change: you will explain how this technology is being used and
how it is influencing societies, groups and individuals. You can choose four out of 6
sections.
o A. Change in the development of relationships (students can focus on any or all of
these: acquaintances, friends, families, groups)
o B. Change in work (focus on any or all: jobs, businesses, corporations, careers,
industries, economics)
o C. Change in the culture (ordinary behaviors, norms, values, beliefs, ethics)
o D. Change in social institutions (education, libraries, medicine, religion,
transportation).
o E. Change in governing (national and international relations, laws, criminal
justice, politics)
o F. Change in entertainment (music, TV, movies, books, magazines, games, new
media)
• Each of the previous four sections will cover three sub-sections, labeled as such:
o 1. Uses and Trends: an overview of the uses and trends of the technology as it
relates to the issue being addressed in this section of the paper, both historically
and currently
o 2. Societal Impact: an analysis of the changes to the ways that large groups,
communities, and societies operate in terms of the issue being addressed in this
section
o 3. Impact on Individuals: an analysis of how individuals in their everyday lives
are impacted by the changes discussed in this section
Once completed, the paper will have FOUR sections with THREE sub-sections in each. There is
no need to change the names of the labels in the writing of the paper – just label them as they are
labeled here.
