More than merely being abstract systems of belief, religions are living concrete realities. The religions we will explore in this class are no exception to this. An important way to help one see this is to highlight the role religion often plays in human life and predicaments. Towards this end, students will be required to write a brief (400-700 word) reflection essay which explores a relevant news story (recent or contemporary) in which religion plays a factor in the actions/events depicted. In particular, students are expected to explore those stories in which adherents of one of the religions explored in this class draw from the teachings of their own religion to advocate for human rights or address socioeconomic challenges (e.g. poverty). A list of examples of the sorts of news stories that fit this description will be provided on Canvas.
The reflection essay will be 400-700 words (2-3 pages). All essays must be formatted with one inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, and double spaced. The only acceptable document form for each essay will be Microsoft Word. The student is welcome to utilize whichever citation style they like so long as they adhere to it in their citations/formatting. All references to work that does not belong to the student must be cited and included in a bibliography. For the reflection essay, sources outside of the news article and class materials are not required but may be helpful when greater explanatory clarity is necessary.
A statement of which news article the student will be drawing fromalong with a link to the relevant article is encouraged. Students are expected to draw their article from prominent non-religious newspapers/news outlets (e.g. The New York Times). While students are encouraged to engage primarily with news pieces (e.g. covering a specific event/events or a contested issue), students can also engage with op-eds (opinion pieces) insofar as such op-eds are centered around the beliefs of real people with respect to a given story or issue (as opposed to merely expressing the opinion of a given author).
The reflection paper itself will have four components. First, students will offer a brief summary of the subject matter and contents of the article. Second, students will highlight how religious commitments motivate the actions described in the article. Third, the student will write a brief reflection on what one learned about the religion explored in the article. The student will conclude with what questions the article raises for them about the religion portrayed therein. The reflection paper will be due on Friday, October 7th.
