Description:
A proposal is a presentation of the topic of the research paper. It offers an overview of the topic and a description of what you will argue, including a working thesis.
Requirements:
2-3 pages. The paper should be typed in Times New Roman 12, double-spaced with standard 1-inch margins. Absolutely NO PLAGIARISM
Organization:
There are lot of ways to format a proposal, but for this class, we will all follow a very specific approach. This will be an essay with the following structure:
The introduction should provide an intro strategy (hook) that states the specific topic of the paper. For this assignment only, the thesis will be a question. This is the question that your research paper thesis will answer.
The first body paragraph will provide background information on the topic. This could be historical information or, depending on the topic, a summary of the legend or narrative that is being analyzed. If necessary, you may have two paragraphs on background.
In the paragraphs that follow, present multiple points of view on the topic. For example, if I were writing about Bhutans quest for Gross National Happiness, I might consider different points of view on whether or not happiness should be a social program. If I were researching the kind of communal housing that is popular in Scandinavia, I might think about the benefits and disadvantages of that kind of housing. At this point, you may not know much about your topic, so some of this requires imaginative thinking on your part. Anticipate the problems and questions you are likely to encounter as you do your research. The point is to be prepared for different points of view on your topic. If you only consider your own preferences or opinions, you may end up with a shallow or weak argument.
The last body paragraph should explain how you plan to research this topic. Be specific. Dont say, I plan to look at journal articles. I know you will look at journal articles because thats what I told you to do. Instead, say something like, I want to see what two economists say about Bhutans progress because I want to know whether the pursuit of national happiness helps or slows a countrys economy. Or, I plan to access a couple of news items about positive psychology because these might give insight into what new research psychologists are pursuing. This shows me that you know what you hope to get by using each type of source.
The conclusion will state the position you plan to argue in the final research paper, including a working thesis. You are free to change your mind or revise the thesis as you continue through the research process, but having a working thesis from the beginning will help you focus your research and choose helpful sources.
I chose a topic in class assignment and he checked my topic which was Healthy and nutritious foods for athletes. He said that I may need to narrow down to a specific sport. Im assuming different types of activity have different nutritional needs. Also I here are some questions I put with my topic
1. How does sport nutrition affect athletes?
2. What is the best diet for an athlete?
3. Do the nutritional needs of athletes eat in a day?
4. Which is better for replacing fluids-water or sports drinks?
5. Is it true that athletes should eat a lot of carbohydrates?
6. When and what should I eat before I compete?
7. Will extra protein help build muscle mass?
8. Should I eat a lot of protein?
9. Should I take an iron supplement?
Here are just some questions to ask as you do the research. Also remember your thesis will be a question.
