Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider the most fundamental organizing structures humans have—family. All societies use kinship as the basic building blocks for forming social groups and classifying people. However, there is extensive variability in the rules and patterns in how people make families. Although we don’t often frame family in this way, we recognize that the patterns of family life serve to fulfill a number of needs. Once you’ve completed your own kinship chart, you’ll be asked to create a list, where you will be asked to go beyond family members to consider other social relationships you have that come with similar expectations. Finally, as a group, you’ll be asked to pull your individual experiences together and show us how you might organize all of these connections into a kind of “chart.”
